Roman armies kept groups of sacred chickens with them when they were campaigning (fighting). The chickens would be consulted before battle like oracles. A special chicken-keeper would offer the chickens food, and if they ate, then the battle would go well. If they didn’t, then battle should be avoided at all costs!
