We’re delighted to announce that we now have FREE coloring pages based on characters from Greek mythology on our Printables page! There are three currently available: Cerberus, Orpheus, and The Graces. Two of them, Cerberus and Orpheus, are based on tiles from our Mythology Match game. The Graces is an original illustration by the divinely talented Ally Frame (allyframe.com). We’ll be putting the spotlight on each of them in a series of blog posts, and today we’re talking about Cerberus!

Children's illustration of Hades in the underworld with his traditional symbols.

Hades was also called Pluto, because the Greek word “Ploutos” meant “wealth.” Hades was the lord of everything “under the earth,” and in the ancient imagination, that included all the gold and jewels underground!

Why Cerberus? As the full-time guardian of the underworld, his coloring page is the perfect way to get into the groove for spooky season. Cerberus was a huge, three-headed dog and a god’s best friend. Specifically, he was Hades’ best friend. Hades was the lord of the underworld in Greek Mythology, and his good boy Cerberus stood guard over the entrance to the Underworld to keep pesky mortals out before their time. Or was it to keep the spirits of mortals in? A lucky few managed to get past him and into the underworld, including the mighty Heracles (Hercules for the Romans) and Orpheus (try his coloring page here!).  Heracles used his muscle to get by, but Orpheus lulled the dog to sleep by singing to it. Sound familiar? Music is also the way that Harry, Hermione, and Ron got past their own Cerberus in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Of course, that wasn’t the original Cerberus. Its name was Fluffy! He still stood guard over an underworld, though in this case it was a trapdoor into a basement.

Cerberus is also a great character for introducing children to the world of classical literature. Kids love dogs (see Paw Patrol for evidence), and Cerberus is technically three dogs at once! He also appears in a wide variety of myths and all manners of modern popular culture. Print and color your free Cerberus coloring page today, then send it to us at support@theclassicalworkshop.com so we can feature it on our Instagram page!

As always, we sign off in Latin. Valēte (wall-AY-tay)! Be well!
